Residency Overview
The podiatry residency program at Katherine Shaw Bethea (KSB) Hospital encompasses all aspects of podiatry medicine and surgery from clinical management, pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative care. Clinical and surgical exposure includes:
- Fore-foot and rear-foot reconstruction
- Fore-foot and rear-foot revision
- Pediatrics
- Internal and external fixation
- Foot and ankle trauma
- Total ankle joint replacements.
The program has a strong emphasis on didactics, leadership, teamwork, and empathic care for patients. Our motivated instructors create a culture that is conducive for educational advancement and a positive learning environment. Participation in research is required. The goal of this program is to make residents are confident and competent physicians and surgeons in foot and ankle care, as well as a leadesr in the field and in their community. KSB Hospital is located in rural Illinois approximately 1.5 hours from Chicago, 45 minutes from Rockford, IL, and 45 minutes from the Quad Cities, IA and offers a supportive learning environment with full collaboration of hospital staff and providers.
About the Program
It is with great pride that Katherine Shaw Bethea (KSB) Hospital is host to an all-encompassing podiatric residency program in foot and rearfoot reconstructive/ankle surgery. The program took their first class in 2013 and accepts 2 residents per year. Student/externs rotate for one-month rotations and are accepted from all of the podiatric medical schools in the United States. It is from these externs that residents are selected to obtain their training in the program.
The podiatry residents at KSB also spend time in off-service rotations that include family medicine, internal medicine, behavioral health, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, cardiology/interventional vascular, pathology, medical imaging, neurology, anesthesia, emergency medicine, and pharmacy. The rotation curriculum, combined with a dedicated weekly academic curriculum, provides inclusive training that affords our residents the best preparation for the board qualifying exams by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery.
The mission statement of the KSB podiatry residency program is to develop our residents into competent physicians, surgeons, and leaders of their profession who exemplify integrity and compassion for others. We do this by providing leadership that is rooted in mentorship and example. Value is placed on the development of relationships and instruction is given by clear expectations and teaching that meets the individual needs and goals of our resident physicians. Our goal is to create a movement of podiatry residency education that takes patient care and services to the next level by empowering the next generation of podiatric physicians and surgeons to provide the best evidence-based medicine to the most empathic patient care possible.
