KSB Nursing Extern Program: Preparing Future Nurses Through Local Partnership
Building the next generation of nurses requires meaningful partnerships today. To help prepare student nurses for the future, the KSB Nursing Extern Program proactively partners with the Sauk Valley Community College Nursing Program.
The aim? To provide student RNs with the opportunity to work with departmental mentoring RNs and facilitate the student’s ability to experience real-world patient care. Student RNs will gain skills in patient assessment, prioritization, team collaboration, and care provision within their scope.
The 10-week, 3-day-a-week program is offered June through July each summer.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students transitioning from first-year to second-year nursing to experience and apply the skills and knowledge they have learned thus far,” says SVCC Instructor Lois Hinton, BSN, RN. “Students work side-by-side with experienced nurses, which helps to solidify concepts and help them gain a deeper understanding of the nursing process.”
Participating students for 2024 included Talia Backer, Mallory Buskhol, Madaline Grove, Ainsleigh Hendrix, Madalyn Munson, Kalley Palmer, Ermira Ramadani, Rebecca Shoemaker, and Madison Thatcher.
“KSB has been a great partner in providing students with this experience,” adds Hinton. “They have been flexible and willing to accommodate the student’s preferences in units they wished to experience. On behalf of my students and myself, I want to thank Hilary Thomas and all the units who helped make this experience great for the students.”
